Ben Brugler: I’ve Ben Thinking...

'...about PUMPKIN PIE POP-TARTS!!'

We’re close enough to the fall season that I can officially turn my attention to two things I love – football and pumpkin flavored anything.

Last November, as some of you know, I proposed on twitter that we petition for a pumpkin-flavored Pop-Tart. Why? Because it basically took my favorite flavor (pumpkin) and merged it with my favorite food, Pop-Tarts. (For a point of reference, I have been eating a Pop-Tart every day since the age of five. I estimate that I’ve eaten more than 7,000 – most of which were my absolute favorite cinnamon.)

Enlisting the AKHIA team we quickly created #pumpkinpiepoptarts and took to twitter to make our case. Of course everyone was in agreement – after all, who doesn’t like pumpkin? In fact, people were so excited that I decided to let Kellogg’s know (the geniuses behind Pop-Tarts). So I wrote to their CMO, Mark Baynes, letting him know what I just let you know – the world demands pumpkin pie-flavored Pop-Tarts. My recommendation was to use the graham crust from the S’mores flavor, add pumpkin filling and top with vanilla frosting, in case you were wondering.

We didn’t hear back but we took solace in the fact that we tried. Pumpkin season was over, and I continued eating my favorites, cinnamon (although this time the multi-grain variety...hey, I aint’ get any younger) and put my dream aside, hoping that one day I would get to try pumpkin pie goodness in the form of a square.

Well — that day has finally arrived!

I received a package today from Kellogg’s – in it? A BOX OF PUMPKIN PIE FLAVORED POP-TARTS!!!

I was in shock! I couldn’t believe my eyes! Did someone send me an early birthday present (October 4, by the way)? Was someone playing a prank on me, mocking up a box? I quickly tore open
the note – addressed to ‘Ben, a true Pop-Tart’s fan’ - and discovered
that this wasn’t a joke – Kellogg’s was actually releasing a pumpkin pie
flavor Pop-Tart! The handwritten note, courtesy of Kirsten Neely, manager, morning foods innovation, let me know that apparently, great minds think alike – Kellogg’s employees had been clamoring for some time that this flavor needed to be made. She let me know that they did receive my email and they tried the graham crust, however, it didn’t taste better than the regular crust. For clarification, the Pop-Tart is regular crust, pumpkin pie filling and vanilla frosting – but with orange, brown and yellow sprinkles.

Kirsten also wrote that she 'thought you should be one of the first to see it - as a Pop-Tart fan!'

Of course I had to try one right away. The result? Everything you
imagined it would be. But the good news is you don’t have to imagine – they are shipping as we speak as a limited edition. Keep your eyes open because trust me, you don’t want to miss these.

On a side note, for all the companies that still wonder ‘should I look into social media?’ This is a great case study as to why yes, you should. You have the chance to connect with your key customers, engage them in a way that motivates them to speak positively about your brand and do it all for the cost of shipping a package.

Class move by Kellogg’s in this case. You guys made my day -- so allow me to say, 'thank you!' I can’t wait to get home and share
these with my four-year old, who, yes, is already hooked...on cinnamon, of course.
