Ben Brugler: I’ve Ben Thinking...

'...about cocaine.'

Just a couple of random thoughts on Texas Rangers’ manager, Ron Washington, admitting he used cocaine last year:

  • I have to respect The Rangers organization. No matter what you can’t say they took the easy road here. But if I looked at it as someone within our company admitted to using drugs we wouldn’t throw them out. We would do everything possible to help them because of the family attitude.
  • It is refreshing to hear someone in baseball actually admit they took drugs.
  • That being said he did wait until he was selected for the random test to admit he took drugs.
  • Maybe I’m too skeptical but I have a hard time believing this is the only time he did it—it’s not for me to judge but there’s something about ’57 year old man taking cocaine one time’ that doesn’t sound right. You don’t wait until you’re near the age of 60 to run some lines.
  • I’ve heard some people in the press say maybe this will help him relate to Josh Hamilton better (the Rangers outfielder recovering from substance abuse). Really? Maybe Mike Tomlin should go bar hopping to relate to Big Ben better too. I think we’re on to a new coaching strategy. I’m scared to see what Phil Jackson could do with this.
  • Why are we just hearing about this now? I mean, technically we're not owed an explanation at all, but if this was last July and he has finished the recovery program, why wait nearly eight months after?
