'...who should replace Michael Scott?'It’s almost September and you know what that means — new TV!
At AKHIA no matter how busy we are we find time to discuss/review/debate our favorite TV shows. Some of us have an affinity for reality TV, especially The Bachelor (Jim). Others like the gems they put on Bravo, such as Bethenny Getting Married and The Real Housewives series (Lindsay). But no matter what, one that we all agree on is The Office.
Sadly, this is Michael Scott’s last year as manager of the Scranton branch. I’ve read a lot of articles, tweets, etc. that suggest replacements for Steve Carell’s character so I thought I’d throw out a few of my own:
- Anyone besides Dwight. Having Dwight takeover would absolutely destroy the dynamic of the show, not to mention hurt the character Rainn Wilson has created. This would be like Kramer living in Jerry’s apartment (longer than the Kenny Rogers Roasters episode). The show is already losing one character, they shouldn’t further complicate it by losing two.
- Eugene Levy. I think Levy is savvy enough to bring a nice balance of sophistication and sense of comedy to Dundler-Mifflin.
- Rob Huebel. I’m a big fan of Huebel from his Best Week Ever days, and he’s already on the show, appearing once as Holly’s new boyfriend from her new branch. It’d be a nice way to bring Amy Ryan back, have her stay as Michael leaves and then introduce Huebel – maybe he comes back to fight for her or something and ends up staying.
- Speaking of Amy Ryan...I think Holly running the branch in Michael’s place would be the closest thing to Michael. And the sky’s the limit with a female version of Michael.
- Kathy Bates. Can we figure out a way to get her to reprise Jo, permanently?
- David Proval. Who? You know him as Richie Aprile on The Soprano’s or Stefania’s dad, Marco, on Everybody Loves Raymond – I think it would be funny to have his gruff, scary presence in the office. If not him, maybe Dan Hedaya (Cher’s dad in Clueless?).
- The old, lovable type. Think of someone who’s been put out to pasture, having to milk his last two years before he can finally retire – he doesn’t want to do anything but sit in his office and think of retirement – but keeps getting pulled into the ridiculousness of Scranton’s day-to-day. I’m thinking the Ed ‘O Neill type. Maybe we can get Sherman Helmsley out of retirement.
- Rob Lowe. Could we figure out a way to spin off his Parks and Recreations character? If not him, maybe Ron Swanson? Ok, ok – don’t mess with a good thing. By the way, if you’re not watching Parks, you need to be.
- David Coechner. Why not turn to another Anchorman alum – Champ Kind? Also known as Todd Packer, already a recurring character.
- SNL alum. There are plenty to chose from but three that popped into my mind: Cheri Oteri, Jon Lovitz, David Spade.
