Don't forget to put the 'social' in Social MediaWe live in a world where some of the people we talk to the most are ones that we've never met.
Odd? I think so. Consider - how many times do you talk to your cross-country twitter friend v. how many times you talk to your spouse/significant other?
One of the most common mistakes of social media is that people forget to put the 'social' in social media. This was my takeaway from yesterday's
DMA Cleveland luncheon, featuring Rob Campbell a.k.a.
@tribetalk, face of the
Cleveland Indians social media program and Social Media Deck.
He spent the majority of his time sharing how social media was simply a vehicle to connect with the followers/friends of the Tribe. It was impressive to see this was one of his key objectives, using every channel as a way to drive a personal, in-person experience.
Sure, it helps to have a venue like a baseball park to host these meetings, but it's something that shouldn't be lost on companies using social media channels, twitter and facebook, among others, to connect with people.
The goal shouldn't be to simply collect friends and followers. The goal should be to create an experience for them once you have connected. Something the Cleveland Indians did very well.
And, as I told Rob, it's nice to just have the opportunity to talk Tribe in October. (Hey, we're Cleveland fans - we'll take what we can get!)
