'....about the best Holiday movie list. EVER!'Black Friday? Try Black November. It’s happening, you know. The holiday season is starting earlier and earlier. Every year. Before you know it, we’ll be cracking Christmas Ale in August. Hey, wait a minute....that’s not a bad thing.
Well, as opposed to previous years, I am not fighting it anymore. In fact, I was blasting Christmas music and drinking Christmas Ale on November 1. My lights? They’re up. My kids Christmas pictures? Snapped. Gifts? Bought and wrapped. Eggnog? Drank. (“It’s good....it’s good!)
And of course, my favorite part of the holidays – the specials and movies. My DVDs are dusted off and my five disc player is stocked. With what, you might ask? Well, let’s take a minute and combine my favorite thing about the holidays with one of my favorite things period – making lists!
Here, for your debate, are the top 10 holiday movies:
- It’s a Wonderful Life
- Christmas Vacation
- White Christmas
- A Christmas Carol (the one with George C. Scott)
- Home Alone
- Polar Express
- A Christmas Story
- Elf
- Planes, Trains and Automobiles (yes, yes, I know it’s Thanksgiving dinner)
- The Ref
Now, in case you missed it last year, my friends and I debated non-holiday movies that make you think of the holidays. After a year to think about it, here’s my take:
- Lord of the Rings – maybe because they came out around the holidays? I don’t know, but I have to watch every year at this time.
- When Harry Met Sally
- Mary Poppins – ABC Family anyone?
- Funny Farm - “Release the deer!”
- Rocky IV – hey, he fights the Russian at Christmas, c’mon
- Harry Potter – again, ABC Family....
- The Godfather – how dare you interrupt Tom Hagan’s Christmas shopping, Solazzo
- Goodfellas – “Take the coat back. Take it back!”
- Die Hard – Yippe kai yo, Merry Christmas
- Sleepless in Seattle - “Horses, horses, horses”
I’m not going to list my favorite holiday specials – you can guess what they are. They’re on everyone’s list. But, before I go, I do want to mention my favorite sitcom ‘very special’ holiday episode. I have to mention Happy Days – remember the one where Fonzie plays like he’s too cool for Christmas and doesn’t want to go to the Cunninghams for dinner? But Richie knows better and gets Mr. C (RIP) to take him to Fonzie’s apartment – where they find him decorating a tiny tree and warming up a can (literally) of beeferoni? Heeeeeyyyyy.....how can you can not get that warm, holiday, fuzzy feeling?
So what do you think of my list? I want to know. And, if you think you’re so smart when it comes to holidays specials and movies, take this quotes quiz!...........................................................................................................................................

You're missing Scrooged! <3 Bill Murray. Also missing from Holiday-but-not-Holiday movie list: The Sound of Music and Wizard of OzThose movies always get played around the holidays. Not sure why. And thanks because now I'm singing "horses, horses, horses" in my head. I miss Thanksgiving movies too, like Goonies and Gremlins. Those never get played on TNT anymore like they used to. -
