What is a legacy? Its definition is even murky: Something that happened in the past or comes from someone in the past. So, something that happens in the past but isn’t judged until the future but is criticized and analyzed in the present. Makes sense.
I think a legacy consists of three equal parts:
1. What you actually did.
2. Who is telling the story of what you did
3. Who you’re being compared to
Interesting that of those three you only have control over one of them – the first. What you actually do. So what is the significance of a legacy? For me it’s a reminder that we should always be focused on what we can control and work to do the best job possible in a way that uplifts and supports those we work with and for. Because no matter what that’s the one part of your legacy no one can argue with or take away.
