Peter Drucker’s warning is a useful gut check for leaders: “If you have quick consensus on an important matter, don’t make the decision.”
The point is not to slow everything down or manufacture disagreement. It is to recognize that important decisions deserve friction before they become direction. When alternatives are not explored, assumptions are not tested and smart people quietly defer to authority, consensus can look like alignment when it is really avoidance.
The opportunity for leaders is to build decision-making cultures where dissent is invited early, politics are replaced with transparency and people believe they can challenge the idea without challenging the person.
Because the goal of dissent is not disagreement. It is a better decision.
